Methoni
Methoni – as well as the whole of the region of Messenia - has recently become one the fastest growing touristic destinations in Greece. Many factors have contributed to this: its excellent beaches and archaeological sites are now easily accessible through the new Athens-Kalamata national road, that allows the distance to the village to be covered in less than 3,5 hours drive;
A great investment
Big investment projects in the areas of tourism / recreational activities and wellness, have significantly upgraded the touristic infrastructure of the region; A prime example is Costa Navarino, the famous six star hotel complex, located half an hour drive from Methoni, that hosts the best golf courses of the country, attracting golfers from all over Europe.
Heritage and culture in the region
The new Kalamata airport provides air traffic facilities that have made it possible for major international airlines to establish regular connections to the most important places of origin in Europe. Major archaeological findings, together with newly built modern museums, have enriched the cultural stock of the region, making it an archaeological wonder for every interested visitor: the Ancient Theatre of Messene, the Castle of Pylos, the Palace of King Nestor, the new Museum of Chora and that of Pylos, hosting important findings from the Mycenaean era, the medieval castles of Methoni and Koroni are but a few of a large number of very significant attractions. Methoni itself, mentioned in Homeric epic poems under the name of “ambeloessos Pedassos”, appears to be a cross-section of the historical heritage of Greece, from Neolithic to modern times. Back to the present, high quality food and gourmet specialties are offered in abundance in affordable prices, completing the attractive portrait of the region.
Due to all above, Messenia during the past ten years has attracted a large number of both celebrities and commoners wishing to build their summer houses in the region, an additional accelerator of growth. It is estimated that a population of at least 8,000 foreigners, mostly from the rest of Europe, live in Messenia, attracting their immediate social environment to visit the area and be tempted to establish themselves there.
Figures speak for themselves: While in 2012 hotels within the municipality Methoni belongs to, had in all 58,059 visitor-stays, this same number increased to 80,358 in 2015, to reach a total of 131,979 in 2017 (source: Statistical Yearbook, http//www.statistics.gr/el/statistics/-/publication/STO12/2017). This booming trend is expected to continue, even at an accelerated pace since it is estimated that the capacity of the region is still very far from being reached. On the real estate – commercial side, prime land prices, after a period of decline, are picking up the last two years, pointing to a steady growth for the near future, according to experts.
